2011 Indian Grand Prix Qualifying Report – 29 October

“Sahara Force India delivered a strong performance at Buddh International Circuit today as Adrian Sutil qualified in eighth place for tomorrow’s Indian Grand Prix. Teammate Paul Di Resta will start from P12.”

Adrian: “We’ve been saying all week that this is a special race for us so I’m very happy with today’s qualifying performance. We are so determined to do well here and today’s result is the first step towards that. P8 is one of my best qualifying results of the season and I think it was the maximum we could achieve from the session. The balance of the car was excellent and I really enjoy this circuit, which seems to suit my driving style. But tomorrow is the important day and now we have to think hard about the strategy we will run. I feel very comfortable with the car and I think we will be more competitive than we were in Korea.”

Paul: “Starting P12 is a bit disappointing really, because we looked quite strong this morning. But I struggled with a bit of understeer in the high-speed corners and we couldn’t fix it during the session. I think the conditions cooled a little bit, which maybe didn’t help us because I couldn’t get the balance quite where I wanted it. I feel that points are still achievable tomorrow and we seem quite strong on the longer runs. There’s a hard task ahead, but I will stay focussed and try to do the best job possible in the team’s home race.”

Adrian clearly loves this circuit and was on top form this afternoon. Paul has also been very strong, but unfortunately he lost the sweet spot he had with the car this morning and missed out on making Q3. Still, we know we have a strong car for tomorrow and I’m hopeful both drivers can be in the hunt for points. 2011 Indian Grand Prix Free Practice Report – 28 October

Adrian: “We had a good couple of sessions today. We ran an aero upgrade on the car this morning and I could feel the difference in stability straight away, so I think we are going to run it for the race. The circuit is good fun and very nicely done. It has some challenging corners and there seem to be plenty of opportunities to overtake. It should make for an interesting and exciting race on Sunday.”

Paul: “It was a new experience today for everyone and we had a lot to get through with our programme. The track is quite exciting and the grip seems to be building nicely. It won’t be an easy race with the DRS zones being so effective and likely to result in lots of overtaking, but from our work today we are getting where we need to be in terms of the set-up. I still need to find a little bit of speed, but once we sit down and analyse the data I’m confident of more good runs tomorrow.”

“Arriving at the Buddh International Circuit and hearing the sound of Formula One engines in India once again was a very special moment. It’s something I have dreamed of for over thirty years and this weekend will be a very emotional one for me. Seeing both Sahara Force Indias as the first cars out on track when free practice began also brought a smile to my face. The Jaypee Group has done an excellent job with this circuit and we can all be very proud of this amazing facility. The drivers have been praising the layout and we all expect a thrilling race. On the track today there was a great deal to learn, but we can be pleased with the work we have achieved. I’ve made no secret of my desire to see both Sahara Force India cars racing well inside the points on Sunday afternoon and today’s work has taken us a step closer to achieving this.”

“It was great to get practice underway here at the Buddh International Circuit in India, which has proved to be an excellent track. There was some early dust on the circuit in FP1, but that quickly cleared and we saw grip levels rise. With an additional set of soft tyres invaluable for our programmes we evaluated some aerodynamic changes to the front and rear of the car with positive indications from the data. Obviously we targeted a slightly higher mileage to increase our data on the circuit and to evaluate the tyre behaviour. Overnight there is much to do to review our results and simulations looking ahead to the rest of the weekend.”

2011 Singapore Grand Prix Race Report – 25 September

“Force India delivered a strong showing in Singapore as the team picked up 12 championship points with Paul coming home in P6 and Adrian in P8. This is the team’s first double points finish since the Australian Grand Prix.”

Tyre strategy: Soft, Supersoft, Soft

Paul: “My first Singapore Grand Prix was a lot of fun and I’m very happy with the outcome. I don’t think the safety car really helped us because I still had a lot of life left in the supersoft tyres in the middle of the race, but it didn’t really hurt us either. After that it was a case of managing my pace to Rosberg, looking after the tyres and bringing the car home.

“I was in free air for the final part of the race, which helped, and the pace was strong. It’s probably my best race of the season, but it’s the result of all the hard work behind the scenes. We came here with an upgrade package that has allowed us to gain performance in the race, gain tyre life, and we saw the benefits of that today.”

Tyre strategy: Supersoft, Soft, Soft

Adrian: “We have been aiming to get both cars in the points for a while now, so we can be very happy with where we finished. The points we scored give us some breathing space over Sauber in the championship. It was quite a normal race for me, although I lost some track position under the safety car as Rosberg got ahead of me and stayed there until the end of the race.

“The final stint was quite difficult because I had to do about 30 laps on the soft tyres. I had Perez close behind me and then Massa was closing in fast on the final lap. Fortunately I had enough to hold on to eighth.”

“I have to say I am delighted with today’s result. We knew we had the performance in the car to get both drivers in the points, but to come away with 12 points is extremely satisfying. It strengthens our sixth place in the championship and moves us closer to fifth place. One of the key moments of the race was the safety car period, when we chose to pit both cars at the same time.

“The pit crew did an excellent job of stacking the cars and that played a critical role in where we ultimately finished. Both Paul and Adrian have performed brilliantly all weekend and haven’t put a foot wrong. With five races remaining we now need to build on this momentum so that we continue our strong finish to the season.”

2011 Singapore Grand Prix Qualifying Report – 24 September

Force India shone brightly under the floodlights of Singapore as Adrian Sutil and Paul Di Resta qualified in P9 and P10 respectively for tomorrow’s race.

Adrian: “We can be pretty happy with today’s result. Going into qualifying we felt we had the pace to make the top ten, but that being higher than ninth and tenth would be difficult to achieve. So once we made Q3 we felt we had got the maximum from the car and that it would be a better decision to save our tyres. We kept an eye on what Mercedes were doing, but stayed in the garage in the end. I think the advantage of saving a set of tyres is worth it because it’s a tough race for tyres and we have more options with the strategy. For tomorrow, anything could happen in the race but our clear goal is to finally get both cars in the points.”

Paul: “Considering the difficult day I had yesterday, it feels pretty good to be starting in P10 for my first Singapore Grand Prix. We knew yesterday that the car had good performance here and I think we got as much as we could from that session. That’s why we stayed in the garage during Q3 because it gives us a free tyre choice for tomorrow on fresh rubber. In terms of tyres I’ve got to rely a bit on the data from Adrian’s car because I didn’t get a chance to do any high fuel runs yesterday. This morning I didn’t feel quite so comfortable on the supersofts but felt happier on the soft tyre. For the race we’ll be aiming to take the fight to the cars ahead of us, but we also need to keep an eye on the guys behind because all the midfield cars have shown strong race pace recently.”

“We knew coming into this weekend that we had the potential to go well here, and so it proved today. It’s a high downforce track and the car has been fast since the start of practice. In every session we’ve shown top ten pace. So it’s satisfying to convert that into a qualifying result with two cars inside the top ten – the first time we’ve achieved that this season. It’s an especially good result considering the time we lost with Paul’s car yesterday in second practice and he’s done a good job to recover from that. The target tomorrow is clearly to build on today’s showing and come away with both cars in the points.”

2011 German Grand Prix Race Report – 24 July

Force India delivered another excellent performance today as Adrian Sutil raced to a superb sixth place in the German Grand Prix. Teammate Paul Di Resta was the victim of a first lap crash, but recovered to finish P13. The eight points scored today move the team into 7th place in the Constructors’ Championship.

Adrian:  “It was a great race today and I’m so pleased to get this result for the team because we really deserved it. We had a great car all weekend and everything just went perfectly. The tyres lasted well and we definitely made the right calls with the strategy, which helped me beat Nico [Rosberg] in the final stint. It was actually quite a lonely race for me because I spent most of the time running in clean air so I could really show the potential of the car. To get this result in my home race also makes it extra special and I’d like to thank the fans for their support this weekend. But this is just the start because we still have lots of work to do in the coming races to score lots of points and catch up with the teams ahead of us.”

Tyre strategy: option, option, prime

Paul: “Once again it’s a frustrating end to my weekend because I had a great chance to score some points today. I made a reasonable start, maintained my position and I was racing with Michael into the first corner. Then I got hit from behind, which must have been Nick [Heidfeld], and that spun me around and compromised my race. It’s a shame because we came here with a great package and we had a good strategy for the race. I pushed hard to recover, but points were just out of reach today. The good news is that Adrian has brought in a lot of points and shown just how competitive the car is.”

“Today has been a wonderful team performance and I’m delighted to see Adrian finish in sixth place – a result that everybody has been working hard to achieve. We have been a bit unlucky in the last few races, but today we demonstrated the true pace of the car and delivered the result to match it. The only frustration is that Paul was the unfortunate victim of a first lap accident with Heidfeld. Without this, I’m sure we could have had both Force Indias finish in the points. Even so, we welcome the eight points scored today – points that are important for our championship position and move us ahead of Toro Rosso.”

2011 British Grand Prix Race Report – 10 July

It was a disappointing afternoon for Force India at Silverstone as Paul Di Resta and Adrian Sutil missed out on points at the British Grand Prix. Adrian came home in P11, while Paul finished in P15.

P11 Adrian Sutil, VJM04/04
Tyre strategy: Intermediates, option, option, option

Adrian:  “After such a promising start to the race it’s disappointing to come away empty-handed. My start was okay and things looked good in the first few laps. The conditions were tricky, with a lot of damp areas in the second sector, but I felt quite confident and was able to run in the points. I think we made the right decision with the strategy to stop three times, but in the end I don’t think we had the pace to hold on for points today.”

Tyre strategy: Intermediates, option, prime

Paul: “It’s extremely disappointing to end my first British Grand Prix in P15. I had a good first part of the race; we seemed quite competitive and I was able to hold on to Jenson [Button] as I concentrated on looking after my intermediate tyres. I think we made the switch to dry tyres at the right moment and we were running well. Then I got a call to come into the pits again, but when I got there the team were expecting Adrian, so there was obviously some confusion.

“It cost me quite a lot of time because the boys had to run back in the garage and fetch my tyres. That cost us about 25 seconds, which pretty much ended my chances. So it’s a frustrating race, but I think we should stay positive because the car has shown well this weekend and that gives me confidence going into the second part of the season.”

“Today simply was not our day. Despite the promise we showed yesterday, the events of the race compromised our strategies and made it very difficult to score points. To begin with things looked very good. Both Paul and Adrian were running strongly in the points and the car continued to perform well. Unfortunately things started to go wrong when we made a serious error on the pit wall.

“We called Paul in for his second scheduled stop, but at the same time Adrian came on the radio reporting a puncture. We tried to get Paul to stay out so that we could service Adrian’s car, but it was too late and Paul was already in the pit lane. That led to some confusion over the tyres being ready for Paul when he arrived at the garage and cost him a great deal of time. As for Adrian, he drove well, but lost out to the two-stoppers in the closing laps. It’s clear we need to regroup and come back stronger in Germany so that we can convert the pace of the car into points.”

2011 British Grand Prix Qualifying Report – 9 July

“Force India enjoyed a successful afternoon at Silverstone as Paul Di Resta recorded his best qualifying performance of the year with sixth on the grid for tomorrow’s British Grand Prix. Teammate Adrian Sutil will start the race from P11.”

Paul: “I’m really happy with the result today. To be here for my first British Grand Prix and to be starting in sixth place feels great. The whole team did an excellent job and made sure we were out on track at the right times. The car has shown very strongly in every session and even in the wet yesterday we were very comfortable.

“Maybe there was a little bit of luck at the end of Q3 when the rain started again, but I think that in the worst case scenario I would have ended up in eighth. Hopefully we can carry the performance into tomorrow and come away with a strong result in my home race.”

Adrian: “I’m quite happy with this qualifying session. It puts us in a good position for tomorrow. It was very close with four or five positions separated by a few tenths and I just missed out on making Q3 in the final few moments. The track conditions were tricky because it was a little bit wet at the beginning of Q2 and the track was constantly improving as it dried.

“We made the right calls with the tyres and made the most of the conditions so I’m quite happy with the outcome. I think the weather conditions are likely to be a bit better tomorrow and points will be the aim.”

“To be starting the British Grand Prix from P6 and P11 is an excellent result for Force India and we can be very pleased with the performance of the car today. The weather conditions have been challenging for everyone over the last couple of days, but we’ve remained focussed on the job and found a good balance with the cars despite the lack of dry running.

“I’m very proud of what Paul has achieved today. He has come here extremely confident and delivered an outstanding performance. Adrian, too, has felt very comfortable and we are now well placed to get both cars in the points tomorrow. Silverstone is always one of the highlights of the season and a special race for Force India. It’s the home of our factory and a strong result here would be a fitting reward for the team’s hard work so far this year.”

2011 Monaco Grand Prix Free Practice 1 & 2 Report – 26 May

FP1 objectives:
Continued evaluation of aero components and set-up work, brake and cooling system checks, control system tests.

FP2 objectives:
Data collection for soft and super-soft tyre compounds, continued aero evaluation.

“A fairly normal day of Thursday practice in Monaco. We continued running elements of the 2011 aero package we tried in Barcelona last week and it was quite positive so we will stick with this for the rest of the weekend. We did all the usual set-up work and found quite a nice balance by the end of the day.

“We ran with the super-soft (option tyre) in the afternoon, which we have used before in winter testing, but this was the first time we’ve used it at a race and in such warm temperatures. The grip is great to begin with but the degradation rate is quite high.”

“It was my first taste of Monaco in a Formula One car and I was pretty happy with how things went this morning. The balance was quite good straight away, especially in the higher speed parts of the lap. Like any street circuit it’s very bumpy here and we worked on making the car ride the bumps better as well as improving the aero balance.

“In the afternoon there was an issue with the car, which meant I lost drive and had to park up. So I lost an hour of running and didn’t get to run the super-soft tyre.”

“A typical Thursday in Monaco with times falling through the two sessions as more laps are run. Our aerodynamic revisions for this event seem to be performing as expected, and the programme obviously involved working on the car in this configuration to improve the balance and adapt to the circuit.

“Unfortunately Paul lost drive exiting the tunnel after about 15 laps in FP2, and so did not run the super-soft tyre. Adrian, however, ran a very good tyre evaluation programme in the afternoon and that will be a good basis for our race strategy.

“There’s more to come for qualifying, and we’ve now plenty of data to analyse with the additional time available tomorrow.”
